THE GIRL CHILD
Growing older increases ones wisdom, and that reflects the truthfulness of the saying “a fool at forty is a fool forever”. Age changes people’s perspectives, thought pattern, wants and needs. A child desires toys and candies while a grown person will dream and work for a stable source of income, a happy family, an academic qualification, a specific status in the society or a thriving business. Lately, my desire seems to baffle everyone around including myself, I strongly wish to have a girl child. With a marital status that reads single, every time I see a beautiful girl child clinging to her parents smiling or sobbing, my heart swells and melts as my wish is to father such a child. With African and Nigerian as my identity, the desire for a girl child as one’s first child connotes wishing away a successor, as a heir is most preferable to a heiress. A girl child is an epitome of subtleness and love, the apple of her parents’ eyes and a mother figure to her younger ones.
With a smile that brightens the heart like the morning sun on the vegetation and with eyes as bright as the full moon. Fathering a princess is an invaluable experience and I wish to be a pillar of strength, a mentor and a teacher throughout her stages of growth. A right thinking, intelligent and brilliant child brings joy to her parents, gender is not a hindrance. The roles played by those who control homes make the society a good or a bad one. Through the girl child, a discipline/caring mother, supportive wife and a well behaved daughter exists. She is indeed a gift.
I can’t help but wonder why someone should reject happiness; she is a beautiful flower that adorns the home, a being so subtle and very pleasing to the soul, a great helper. In later life, she cares and supports a family, suffering painful pregnancy and child delivery. The world is incomplete without her roles as an educator, a doctor, a writer, a nurse, a cook, a mother, a wife and a supportive partner and all the good roles she has played so far.
